Have you ever met someone and thought, there is absolutely no way I wasn’t supposed to meet you?
Maybe it’s your partner, your best friend, or someone who was only in your life for a short time — but somehow, meeting them changed everything.
In this episode of Psychic Whispers, I’m exploring fate, free will, soul connections, past lives and those ridiculously unlikely meetings that make you wonder whether coincidence is really enough to explain them.
After more than thirty years of talking to people about love and relationships, I do believe some people are meant to cross our paths. But here’s the thing: meant to meet doesn’t necessarily mean meant to stay.
Perhaps fate introduces us. Free will decides what happens next.

Hello and welcome to the Psychic Whispers Podcast. Hi there and welcome back to the Psychic Whispers Podcast. Okay. Have you ever met somebody and thought there is absolutely no way I was not supposed to meet you? Maybe it's your partner, your best friend, someone who became incredibly important to you, or maybe, and I think this is actually just as interesting. It was somebody who was only in your life for a relatively short amount of time. But somehow meeting them changed something. Maybe they changed the direction you were heading in. Maybe they introduced you to somebody else. Maybe they made you question something. Or perhaps they broke your heart. Perhaps they showed you a version of yourself you hadn't met yet. Or maybe the circumstances of meeting them were just so ridiculously unlikely that even years later you think, How the hell did that happen? You know, if you'd have left five minutes later, if you'd have taken a different job, gone to a different pub, or said no instead of yes, maybe if you'd have stayed home that night, your paths might never have crossed. Obviously, in all of these years of doing psychic readings, I have probably had thousands and thousands of conversations about relationships. I mean, romantic relationships, obviously, but also friendships, family, people we've lost, people we just can't forget, and people we haven't spoken to for 20 years, but who still somehow occupy this little space in our story? And one of the questions underneath so many of those conversations is are some people just simply meant to find each other? So if you haven't guessed, that's what I want to talk about today. There's just not one straightforward answer to this, which is why, you know, I find it so interesting. But having sat here behind so many stories where fate just was and seemed to be the intervention, and my own life and the examples in that, which feel like fate was at work. I just, I love this question. And I get asked it in so many different ways by so many different people that it clearly were all so curious. So let's talk about the people who feel familiar. I think this is something I imagine quite a few of you have experienced. Meeting someone for the first time, and they just don't entirely feel like a stranger, even though your brain is saying, I've just met them. There's just something familiar about them. And, you know, I'm not necessarily talking about chemistry, by the way, because, you know, obviously that happens. But, you know, you meet somebody and your brain basically goes, Oh, hello. No, that's a that's a different podcast. Or maybe not. I'm talking about recognition, that strange feeling of ease with someone. You start talking, and somehow you're three hours into a conversation when you met 20 minutes ago. Or you look at someone and there's just a completely irrational sense of, I know you, you know, except you don't. Not in this life. Anyway. And obviously, depending on your beliefs, there's a lot of explanations for that. Psychologically, perhaps somebody feels familiar because something about them resembles someone that we've known before. You know, I can get down with that too. Maybe their mannerisms or their energy or their voice or just the way that they interact with us. I can see it triggering memories of someone that we have connected with. You know, our brains are constantly making connections that we're not consciously aware of. I, again, I accept that. But spiritually, you know, I believe in past lives. And I believe it's possible that we encounter people that we've known before. Do I think every person you immediately click with was your husband in ancient Egypt? No. But, you know, last week we talked about spiritual things that make me raise an eyebrow. And I'm not undoing all of that, obviously, immediately. It's clear, you know, sometimes it's not every single thing. But I have had enough good experiences through readings over the years to believe that some relationships just seem to carry something older than the relationship itself. I my wife comes to mind, my wife Nick, because when we met, it was just like, oh, there you are. Instantly, just without a doubt, it felt like we just picked up where we'd left off, even though we'd never picked up in this lifetime until that point. And that is fascinating to me. You know, if you believe that we live more than once, and if consciousness continues, if that's your belief, it certainly is mine, then why wouldn't relationships continue too? I get it, maybe not in the same form. Maybe somebody who is your parent in another lifetime is your friend in this one, or perhaps somebody you've loved before returns in a completely different role. You know, it's not always clear. I think it chops and changes really depending on the connection. And I am very comfortable saying I don't know. I've seen it where people have seemed to come together as lovers in time and time again, and other people who have chopped and changed the roles in which they have experienced past lives with when we've explored these lives, when we've explored that on a spiritual basis. But that feeling of recognition, that's worth exploring. That's worth giving some validation to because there's so many of us on this planet who have said there was just something so familiar. And there's too many of us saying something for it not to be a thing, right? It's valid. Okay, let's talk about the ridiculously unlikely meetings. There are these circumstances around how people meet, and they are just extraordinary sometimes. I've heard some doozies. Our lives are essentially made up of thousands upon thousands of tiny decisions, most of which we don't even think about. You leave the house, and 10 minutes later than usual, maybe you change jobs or you accept an invitation that you nearly turn down, somebody cancels, so somebody else gets invited, you move house, you know, you download an app, take the wrong turn, decide to go somewhere in a whim, poof, and suddenly there's a person standing in front of you who becomes part of your life. Sometimes quite permanently. And when you trace the chain of events backwards, it's almost ridiculous. One tiny change, and you wouldn't have met. I think most long-term couples can probably do this. Go back to the beginning of your relationship and ask, what had to happen for us to meet? Sometimes the answer is a lot. The universe works over time. Then there are relationships that only happen because, you know, somebody went through a breakup or lost a job or moved somewhere they hadn't planned to live. You know, or a friend is dragging them somewhere they didn't particularly want to go. You know, something that might have felt like an inconvenience or even a disaster eventually became part of the chain that led to somebody enormously important. I mean, does that prove fate? Not really. And, you know, I don't think we need to pretend that does. Coincidences, you know, they can happen. Statistically unlikely things happen. Humans are also incredibly good at looking backwards and creating a story from events. Okay, I get it. But every now and then you look at a chain of circumstances and you think, bloody hell. And I think it's just okay to leave a little room for mystery here. And so on the subject of fate, let's talk about the fate versus the free will. Because this is where it gets really interesting for me. I have said it before, and I'm gonna say it again. I believe in fate. I also very strongly believe in free will. I I've done an episode about this. The whole correlation between the two things. They are not one thing over the other, they coexist. That's my belief. And people sometimes think that those two beliefs contradict each other. And I don't think they do at all. I've always seen life as that combination of the two. There may be certain crossroads or possibilities or certain people or even certain moments. But what we do when we reach them is our own. Maybe relationships work in the same way. Maybe fate creates the introduction. Maybe free will decides what happens afterwards. And I actually really like that. Perhaps fate introduces us and free will decides what we do with the introduction. Because think about it. Even if you believe wholeheartedly that you were destined to meet somebody, you still have to build the relationship and you still have to choose them. You're gonna have to communicate. You'll still have to apologize when you're being a jerk. You'll still have to navigate change and show up for that person. Fate doesn't do the relationship for you. And I think sometimes spiritual ideas around relationships accidentally remove our agency when we think about it. You know, if we start thinking, if we're meant to be together, it'll work. You know, not necessarily. Two people can have an extraordinary connection and still make terrible choices. They have free will. People do change, timing does matter, and circumstances matter. And sometimes love is the only thing required to make a relationship work. Okay. This is a tough segment of this podcast episode. But I'm gonna say it. Meant to meet doesn't always mean meant to stay. And herein lies probably the biggest thing I want to say in this episode. Because when we talk about fate and soulmates and people being meant to find each other, we almost automatically assume that we're talking about forever. I don't. I absolutely believe that somebody can be meant to cross your path without being meant to walk beside you for the rest of your life. And I know that idea can sound very sad. I don't actually think it is when I look at the whole picture. There are people that I've known who aren't a part of my life anymore who are still incredibly important to it. I'm sure you have them too. You know, relationships that just faded out or drifted apart, or people maybe that you worked with or that you loved, or maybe who hurt you, or or that you hurt. And sometimes their importance only becomes obvious afterwards. We put pieces together, we get it later. Maybe meeting them changed your confidence. Maybe they encouraged you to do something, or they introduced you to an interest that became a huge part of your life. You moved somewhere because of them, changed careers, met somebody else, had kids, learned something about yourself, set a boundary for the first time. Maybe they were the person who finally made you realize I don't want to live like this anymore. Not every important relationship has to be a successful relationship. I think we have this very strange habit of measuring relationships almost entirely by how long they lasted. 50 years, success. Six months, failure. But that's really simplistic, if I'm honest. Somebody can be in your life for six months and affect you for the next 30 years. And somebody can be in your life for 30 years without ever really knowing you. That's possible. Duration is not the same thing as significance. Should we be proud of how long someone's been in our life? Yeah, of course. If we feel connected to that relationship and we have lasted 30 years or 50 years or, you know, three years, we should celebrate those years, especially when we're staying connected, especially when we're staying present. But we shouldn't automatically assume that those years rack up to something that they might not if the connection isn't really there. Do you know what I mean? And we certainly shouldn't dismiss the people that were there for six months who we think they were only there for six months and had this major impact on our life and dismiss it just because it was six months. Timing doesn't always equate in the way that it should or needs to, or our brain says so. And this is where soulmates get complicated. Aren't all good things complicated? I do believe in soul connections. I'm not always a fan of the way that we've romanticized the word soulmate. Yeah, we've turned it into this there is one person in the entire universe specifically designed for me. I mean, that's a pressure, right? Eight billion people, and you gotta find fucking Dave, right? I mean, Dave, where are you? I don't think that's how it works necessarily. I think we can have many profound connections in one lifetime, romantic and otherwise. Your soulmate might be your best friend or your kid or your sibling or a teacher, or someone you worked with, or someone you love for 10 years, or somebody you love for 10 weeks. And yeah, perhaps there are certain people whose souls we've encountered before, but I don't think the label gives a relationship immunity from reality. And this is really important because I've seen people stay emotionally attached to relationships that are hurting them because they've decided that their person is their soulmate or their twin flame or karmic partner. And therefore the suffering becomes evidence of how important the relationship is. I don't believe that. A spiritual connection does not override boundaries or someone else's free will. And it certainly doesn't mean you have to tolerate being treated badly. I'm not okay with that. Toxic relationships are toxic relationships, even if you feel they are strongly and really intimately connected to you. Sometimes the person who changes your life is the person you eventually have to walk away from. Both things can be true. Okay. So what about the people that we keep finding? This is another aspect that I find just incredibly fascinating. The people who keep crossing paths. You meet someone, nothing really happens. Years pass, somehow they're back. Like what? Maybe you lose touch again. Then years later, there they are again. Sometimes romantically, sometimes in just friendship, sometimes just professionally. And I find those relationships interesting because you almost wonder, okay, why do we keep ending up in the same room? What's going on? Maybe they know Dave, in case you're looking for Dave. Okay, again, I'm not saying that every person who follows you on Instagram after 15 years is being delivered by spirit. Let's just calm that down. But sometimes the timing of recognition can be extraordinary. You know, you're not the same people anymore. Maybe the first time you met, one of you wasn't ready. Maybe you needed different experiences. Maybe the relationship could only exist in the form it has now because of everything that happened in between. Or maybe really it is just coincidence. Who knows? I think it could be all of those things. But I think some of the most interesting spiritual questions live precisely there in those things we can't quite prove either way. Isn't that where the magic is? Yeah. All right. So, what about the people we don't want to have met? Because there's another side to this. It's very easy to talk about fate when the person was wonderful. Much, much harder when somebody has caused enormous pain. And here is where I become uncomfortable with spiritual cliches. I don't want to tell somebody you're meant to meet the person who traumatized you because your soul needed the lesson. No, I think we have to be really careful with that. You're allowed to find meaning in something painful that happened to you. Please do, by the way. It will likely help you in processing that experience. And it's going to make some sense out of something that just maybe didn't make sense. But that's different from somebody else telling you the pain had to happen. You know, maybe you eventually became stronger or it changed the direction of your life, and perhaps something beautiful eventually grew from the aftermath, amazing. But it doesn't mean that the original hurt was necessary or deserved. We don't need to make suffering sacred in order to acknowledge growth. And I think this is where spirituality needs a little common sense and compassion sometimes. But if you are somebody who happens to be dealing with something that was traumatizing or was difficult, hindsight is a beautiful thing. We are allowed to look back and see what we've gained or grown or lost in that experience. And reflection is a great teacher. It really is. It doesn't mean that you had to, this was part of your spiritual makeup. We had to go through these things. I don't want you to see that as something that, you know, was faded in every sense of the word. But you can learn from anything. And I encourage that. I think if we happen to be dealing with something and processing it, please, please look at what you have gained, grown, or learned about yourself in the process of that because it's it's it's happened. We may as well digest some of that in a positive way if we can. So do I think some people are meant to find each other? Yes, of course I do. Of course I do. I've heard too many stories. I have heard too many stories. I don't think I could spend 30 years doing the work I've done to say that every extraordinary human connection I've witnessed was a meaningless coincidence. Obviously not. I feel like I've got my proof of this. I've seen too much strange timing and too many people arriving precisely at the right moment. In fact, my wife and I, incredible. We finally met uh, you know, back in 2015. And when we have correlated different stories in our lives, I've told a story about my life pre-her. She's told a story about her life pre-me. We have realized there were so many times we nearly met. In fact, we were at the same place at the same time, more than once. And it's insane to me that that possibility of encountering her before I did was there. I mean, we're talking too many things that were lined up in the exact moments to say, well, hang on a second. I the universe was doing its absolute best to put us together for sure. Amazing, just incredible. And I've seen this in other people. I have seen people amazing, go abroad, go on holiday, meet somebody and on holiday in a foreign country who happens to live minutes from them, sometimes around the corner, and connect and go home and start dating. I, you know, it's crazy to me. I was like, okay, around the corner, you could have met all these years and you've met, you know, in Turkey on your holiday. Like, whoa. It's amazing to me how much the universe does its absolute best to try and throw two people and collide. This is when I start talking to people like, trust the process, trust that someone's coming, trust that you will meet someone because the universe is working hard to bring someone to you. Because when they do finally arrive, you'll realize there were many times you might have, you know, been tried to be put together already. There are just too many connections that seem to carry something far deeper than the circumstances should allow. Too many moments when even I have thought, how did these two people ever manage to find each other? Incredible. But, you know, I don't think fate is as simple as you're meant to meet, therefore you're meant to be together forever. You know, I don't necessarily think that's the point, as I said. It's not that I don't believe that you couldn't be. I also have seen people get together and stay together in a very happy, long-lasting connection. But what I'm saying is, even when we are with our soulmates and we've connected on a deep level, we still have to do the work, guys. We still have to put into the relationship. The relationship still has to grow positively together and evolve together and put the effort in. It takes a lot of dedication. And when you are so in love or even so dedicated to that friendship or that person and you're accepting, accepting of them and their changes and their transitions, when you are embraceive of that and the both of you grow in the same way and it remains healthy, that's extraordinary to me. But I don't want us to think, right, I need to write out this storm for the next 20 years because, well, they're my soulmate, you know? That's not the point. Some people, well, they're destinations. Others are crossroads. And, you know, some people become home. There are many people who are just lessons or mirrors. Sometimes they wake something up in us or redirect us. Some love us for decades. Some absolutely break our hearts. Others stay. Some they leave. And some people probably have no cosmic significance whatsoever and just happen to work in the same office as us. Well, there you go. Okay, so not every human interaction is destiny, but I do believe there are certain people whose arrival changes and shapes our lives. And sometimes the circumstances of fighting each other are just so strange and weird that I can't help but wondering where the bigger pieces absolutely were at work. You just know they were. You just know they were. And I've done readings too where I have predicted those meetings and said, Well, you're going to meet somebody at this thing, and blah, blah, blah. Here's an event coming up, and I see all these things, and this person comes in because fate is trying. And I get snippets of that. I've had that more than a handful of times. I mean, all my 30 years, it's happened a lot in readings. But for me, that's another proof. And they call back and they go, right, they showed up. It happened, you know, fantastic. And I just, yeah, there's too much proof for me. Of course we are. Of course we're fated and destined. Certain people are just meant to be there. Now, my final thoughts, right? Don't forget to ask the right questions as well. Sometimes is it just was I meant to meet this person? Maybe the more interesting question is, what did meeting this person change? You know, who were you before them? Who were you afterwards? What happened because your paths crossed? Maybe, you know, that's where the meaning actually is. Not, you know, necessarily whether they stayed or whether the relationship looked the way you expected, or necessarily even whether it ended well. But the fact that two lives intersected and neither continued in exactly the same direction afterwards, I find that incredibly beautiful and a little strange and very, very human. So, yes, I of course. I think fate doesn't guarantee the ending, but it definitely creates the moment. I would love to hear your experiences on this subject. Have you got somebody in your life who you're absolutely convinced you were meant to meet? Or maybe there was somebody in your life who isn't anymore, but when you look back, you can see how meeting them changed its direction. Please tell me. I'd love to hear it.
